Heating Solutions For Large Commercial Spaces

Heating a commercial space can be challenging if it is large and open like a warehouse or a shop. Commercial heating solutions are out there, though, and choosing the one that will work for your space is not as difficult as it might seem, but there are some advantages and disadvantages to them that you should consider.

Hot Water Heat

Heating your space with hot water is efficient and works well, but it does require a boiler to heat the water for the commercial heating system. The system uses a large radiator or heat exchanger hanging from the ceiling with a large fan on it that pushes air through the radiator.

The air is heated as it passes through the radiator or heat exchanger and is circulated around the space by the fan. In large spaces, these systems can have multiple radiators running off the same boiler, but the larger the space is, the larger the boiler will need to be to provide the heat you need in the space. The boiler maintenance can be a little more work with this system, but you can put the boiler to work heating water for other uses as well if it is large enough.

One downside to a commercial heating system that uses this method to transfer heat is the noise generated by the fans. In some environments, that noise could be a problem, so these systems are best suited to environments that are already noisy and require people to wear hearing protection in the area.

Radiant Heating Systems

Commercial heating systems that use radiant heating are often used in spaces that require a system that creates less noise and does not blow dust around. The ceilings typically need to be lower for these systems to work best, but if the heater is large enough and produces a large amount of heat, it can work even in spaces with high ceilings.

Often the radiant heating systems use a large tube that contains a burner and is powered by natural gas or propane. Reflectors along the backside of the tube prevent the heat from rising and direct the heat towards the room. In large spaces that require a lot of heat, multiple units can be put in place to heat the space evenly.

The use of gas to power the radiant commercial heating system is very efficient and can reduce the cost of heating large spaces. Because of how the system works, it is not a great fit for spaces where paint and flammable chemicals are used but can work well in warehouses, loading docks, and production areas that do not use chemicals in the process.
